Chapter Fourteen

Nessia worked hard over the next several days to focus on the future while Fergus was away. Freya proved to be quite helpful on that point too, as she proceeded to detail every last single man within a five mile radius.

“—and we don’t want him to be too much older than you either,” she said. Freya’s conversation had begun two days earlier and besides an occasional “Aye”, “no” or “I really do not think so” Nessia had added little to it.

As the younger woman prattled, Nessia took advantage of the clear sky and looked out over the vast beauty before her. Varrich was indeed situated at a vantage point to allow a viewer to scan for miles and miles out over the land. God, but this place was stunning! Nessia closed her eyes and breathed in the soft, late August air filled with the scents of mature herbs planted by herself and Freya just weeks earlier. The scents enveloped her and gave her peace for as surely as the plants had taken root on this hill, so had she and for the first time in months, she knew she would be well. Her feelings for Fergus were quelled. They had been intensified by the horrible loss she’d experienced in losing William, but she was over Fergus now. Of course it was easier to believe that when he was absent.

When Nessia opened her eyes, she viewed a lone rider approaching in the distance. It didn’t take her long to figure out who it was. No one she had ever seen before could command a horse quite like Fergus. Heaving a sigh, she turned back to Freya to inspect the growth of their labours to discover she was the one being carefully inspected.

“Or you could just admit your feelings for Fergus and be done with it,” Freya said, her voice soft and low.

Nessia was at a loss as to how to respond and after opening and closing her mouth a few times decided on no response at all.

“Oh come now, Nessia, I’ve seen you look at him and I know you’ve never looked at anyone else the same way. Fergus can be a bit daft at times you know and sometimes needs to have things laid out clearly before him if you ken my meaning.”

Freya pulled her into an embrace. “I’ve seen him look at you too and I can tell you right now if he does like you, and I think he does, you are going to have to be the one to initiate the discussion—a knock on the head so to speak,” she said with a grin.

The closer Fergus got to Varrich, the more Nessia realized she had been lying horribly to herself yet again. But he had called her sister and that indicated he harboured no romantic feelings for her. If she were to find out for sure then maybe she could get past him for good. But what if he really did want her as Freya suggested? The thought released dozens of butterflies into her stomach.
